Garden walls & brickwork

Brick and block work is what turns a flat garden into one with levels: raised beds along the fence, steps up to the lawn, a low front wall that matches the house.

The white rendered raised beds in our photos are block walls, rendered and painted, with drainage holes at the bottom so the soil does not hold water against the wall.

For front walls we match the brick to the house where we can, so the new wall looks like it was always there.

Questions about garden walls & brickwork

Do garden walls need planning permission?

A wall next to a road up to 1 metre high, or up to 2 metres elsewhere, normally does not. Listed buildings and conservation areas have their own rules.

Can you build raised beds and steps with the patio?

Yes, most of our patios include them: it is one job and the levels are planned together.
