Decking

A deck works where the ground is uneven or the back door sits higher than the garden: it gives you a level floor without digging out tonnes of soil.

The frame decides how long a deck lasts. We keep it off the soil, leave air underneath, and space the joists for the boards you chose.

Composite boards cost more at the start but do not need oiling; timber is warmer to look at and cheaper to replace one board at a time.

Recent decking work includes a deck in Harrow.

Questions about decking

Do I need planning permission for decking?

Not usually, as long as the deck is no higher than 30 cm above the ground and covers no more than half the garden.

Can you take out an old deck?

Yes, and take the timber away.
